Casa da Moeda do Brasil is a wholly federal government-owned company operating under the auspices of the Ministry of Finance, with private-law legal personality and independent equity and management. It has an exclusive mandate for the production of Brazilian circulation coins and banknotes, federal stamps and fiscal stamps, federal government debt securities, booklets, passports and fiscal control activities under Act 11488/2007 and Act 10833/2003. The Mint is headquartered in Brasilia (DF) and has offices and manufacturing sites in Rio de Janeiro (RJ). Since 1975 the Mint has been positioned to serve both local and global markets. To date, we have supplied products and services to Angola, Argentina, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guinea Bissau, Haiti, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, Venezuela and Zaire. The Mint was founded on March 8, 1694 by the then King of Portugal, D. Pedro II, for local production of coinage from Brazil’s gold mines. Its first headquarters were in the city of Salvador (BA). Today, the Mint’s production facilities are largely located in a complex in the district of Santa Cruz, on the west side of Rio de Janeiro, including our banknote, coinage and medals, and security printing facilities.
Since 1975 the Mint has been positioned to serve both local and global markets.
Timeline of the Brazilian Mint
- 1694
The Mint is founded in Salvador.
- 1695
Brazil’s first official coinage is minted, including 1,000, 2,000 and 4,000 réis gold coins and 20, 40, 80, 160, 320 and 640 réis silver coins.
- 1698
The Mint is transferred to the Rio de Janeiro Board of Trade.
- 1700
The Mint’s operations are transferred to Recife (PE), where they remain until 1702.
- 1706
The Mint relocates its headquarters in Rio de Janeiro to Praça do Carmo (currently Praça XV), remaining there until returning to Salvador in 1714.
- 1830
The Mint shuts down its Salvador headquarters and is relocated in Rio de Janeiro.
- 1843
The “Olho de Boi” stamp is launched as the first postage stamp in the Americas, and the third in the world, to have nationwide validity.
- 1868
New facilities are opened at Praça da Aclimação (currently Praça da República).
- 1961
The first banknote entirely produced in Brazil.
- 1969
A new banknote production facility starts operations at Praça da República.
- 1976
The Mint starts production of Brazilian passports.
- 1980
The Mint initiates gold beneficiation (receipt, smelting and appraisal) operations.
- 1982
Preparations begin for the Mint’s relocation from Praça da República to Santa Cruz.
- 1984
The Mint’s Manufacturing Complex officially starts operation on November 1 in Santa Cruz, Rio de Janeiro.
- 1994
The Real banknote family is launched on July 1 with a new production record, replacing an entire family of Brazilian banknotes in a single year.
- 1998
A blank electroplating unit is built for coinage production.
- 2000
Brazil’s first polymer banknote (R$ 10) is produced.
- 2005
Official launch of a new Brazilian Passport design conforming to International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards.
- 2007
The Mint supplies medals for the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro.
- 2008
Work begins on the country-wide implementation of cigarette production control and traceability for the Brazilian Internal Revenue Service.
- 2009
Work begins on the country-wide deployment of a cold beverage production control and traceability system for the Brazilian Internal Revenue Service. Work begins on a manufacturing plant upgrade and expansion of banknote and coin production capacity for the Central Bank of Brazil.
- 2010
Production of the second Real banknote family begins, with new security features.
- 2011
The Mint supplies medals for the Rio de Janeiro Military World Games.
- 2014
The Mint launches commemorative coins for the FIFA World Cup 2014 (Brazil).
- 2015
Work begins on the art and production of the Olympic medals and participation medals for the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games and on the production of 10-year Brazilian passports.
- 2016
The Mint supplies Olympic medals, diplomas and certificates and participation medals for the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
